Emilie sat on the settee in the parlor, her brow puckered as she gazed at the note in her lap. Three days past, she had sent a lad to Washington-on- the-Brazos to seek out Aaron Rice. Not wanting to give Edgar a chance to change his mind, she had written Aaron requesting that he come fetch Olivia’s portrait.

As if she hadn’t read the note a dozen times this morning, Emilie leaned back and studied the reply Aaron sent back.

My dear Mrs. Ashland,

I am greatly pleased to hear that your husband has condescended to relinquish my sister’s portrait to its rightful owners. You are most kind to invite me to your home to fetch it.

I shall happily anticipate attending you on the day and hour appointed.
